The Bypass - A Reality Check - Karl’s Simulations

A 3-dimensional computer model of the proposed 3 lane Sand Creek Bypass highway was created by Dr. Karl Ottenstein. It is based on engineering drawings obtained by NICAN from ITD. Karl inserted the model into 8 different photographic views of the bypass from the Lakeside Inn to the Cedar Street Bridge. The before and after visualizations reveal the magnitude of the proposed freeway and its visual impacts on the Sand Creek area. Three of the pictures are from the same viewpoint as the conceptual images created and distributed by ITD. ITD's pictures are included for comparison.

Karl Ottenstein has a PhD in Computer Science from Purdue University, is a former professor, corporate and government scientist, and has worked with 3 dimensional computer modeling for about 10 years.

Alternative Ideas for the Bypass

Routes Not Considered by ITD

EWU Routes

The EWU team also developed two alternative routes to the west that are more suitable according to the analysis. Both routes intersect Hwy 2 in the vicinity of Dover and follow it to 5th Avenue, skirting along the edge of town. As the students explained, this route would remove the trucks and other through traffic from downtown, while still keeping traffic close to town in order to avoid potential economic losses to the downtown businesses.

Alternative ideas for development of the Sand Creek Peninsula

NICAN and many others in the community believe the waterfront area is one of Sandpoint’s most valuable assets. Preserving and enhancing it is essential to the long term economic vitality of the town and the area. Below are two possible "visions" for development of the peninsula that would tap into the potential of the waterfront to provide Sandpoint with highly desirable cultural and recreational amenities. Putting a highway through the middle of it does not make economic or aesthetic sense and will ruin it for future positive development.
